 About this recording
This recording was originally issued as a cassette tape by Proudsound in 1989, and was enthusiastically received at the time:
From the first joyful notes of Christmas is coming to the last triumphant bars of Adeste Fideles, there is not a sour or unmusical note in this beautiful compilation of sacred and secular Christmas carols. . . . It features the choir of Winchester College Chapel, who are joined by the Winchester College St Michael's choir in seven of the 20 carols, both old and new. The treble voices are superb, but the contribution from the lower parts, too, is excellent good, unforced tone and obviously not at all dependent on the four college masters who join the young altos, tenors and basses. The choir is directed by Julian Smith: to him must be given great praise for a delightful, musical treat listen especially for his extraordinarily effective last-verse descant, in which the trebles are doubled by a lone trumpeter, in Once in royal David's city. There is a real sense of Christmas in all of this, and one gets the distinct impression that the owners of these fresh young voices were thoroughly enjoying themselves.
